I'm pretty sure it's related to a bee sting since ants evolved from bees, so if you're allergic to bees, I'm pretty sure you'll be allergic to Pogonomyrmex.

Ants did not evolve from bees. They did evolve from a common ancestor they have with wasps.

Ehh I guess I'm a kid but I think I can contain Pogonomyrmex, going to try them this year. Hopefully I don't get stung.

Yeah the pack a punch. I don't keep any Pogonomyrmex anymore for that reason. I had a few get out and stung my 4 year old. He swelled up really bad we had to take him to the ER.


Yes. I have been stung by californicus and it was not the most pleasant experience. I got stung on my wrist and it felt like a very tight pinch, twisting slowly, multiplied by, like 10 or 100. Don’t know which exactly. But I know one thing. Try not to get stung!! But I have an infertile queen and they are still fun to keep though.

Are these still alive?

Species being kept:

 

 Solenopsis "plebeius", Camponotus maritimus, Formica cf. subaenescens, Formica cf. aerata, Lasius cf. americanus, Lasius aphidicola, Lasius brevicornis, Lasius nr claviger, Nylanderia vividula, Temnothorax nevadensis, Temnothorax chandleri, Temnothorax arboreus Solenopsis validiuscula, Solenopsis truncorum, Solenopsis xyloni, Formica perpilosa, Formica cf. lasiodes, Formica cf. neogagates Pogonomyrmex californicus, Pogonomyrmex salinus, and Myrmecocystus testaceus!!!!

 

Hoping to find this year:

Myrmecocystus, Liometopum occidentale, Camponotus essigi, Camponotus fragilis, Manica bradleyi, Formica perpilosa, Pheidole hyatti, and a Parasitic Formica sp.

 

People are stupid. It explains a lot...
