I suspect these species are not a fan of protein. It would be interesting seeing these bad girls taking down a cricket or a super mealworm.

Actually Pogonomyrmex are nuts for protein. My queen goes crazy for all the protein I give her but never accepts seeds. I suspect when she gets workers she will take more interest.

I don't do live feedings. I always freeze, and sometimes boil as well any insects I give my colonies.

I pre kill all feeders except for fruit flies. The ants can kill the flies much faster then I can and it’s not really a brutal death.

Huge photo dump of how the colony is doing. Simply crazy how far they've grown in less than a year.

Gave this colony a frozen and then boiled dampwood termite elate. They made quick work of it.

I’m seriously considering ordering one of these colonies. Would you recommend it?

These are some of my favorite ants to keep at the moment. I enjoyed my first colony so much, I ordered a second colony. Very easy to take care of, however I'd recommend a flat nest with the glass on the top. That way the colony can't gum it up as easy. (I also put the heat on the glass, heating from the top down like their nest would be in the wild.) They are super clumsy and trip/fall a lot, funny ants to watch. They also can't climb very easy. So technically you don't have to use barrier in their outworld, although I do as I've found that some workers can climb the corners a bit.

Normal diet for my colonies is dandelion seeds, chia seeds, poppy seeds, fruit flies, and fish food flakes. I give my main colony sunburst as well, although it's unnecessary.
