Congrats! I’ve never had these queens eat their eggs. I just very gently lift a towel that is covering them. Don’t pick up or jostle the tube, and you’ll be fine.

😙

Sooooooo

After reading to just remove them towel and don't shake the tube I realized I am indeed an idiot. I had paper tube over the tube so everytime I checked her I was moving her all over the place.

I carefully and with as little movement as possible I took off the tube and replaced it with a towel.

I didn't double check, and the picture is crap, but I didn't see any eggs.20210401_102011.jpg

I'm just gonna leave it alone for now.

I'm trying to draw my ants to help learn about their distinctive features.. but I'm not much of an artist. Constructive feedback is always appreciated and I try to use it to get better but I am not an artist so I don't get much better lol.

In other news .. I was planning to release my acorn ants because they don't seem to have a queen .. but noticed new eggs .. so I might not release them.

You very well may have a queen. I don’t think the size difference is very great for their queens compared to workers.

I think I might even see it in the middle on the top. Maybe I’m wrong it’s hard to tell because a worker is on top of it.

Well I'm pretty sure I see it. Besides, where would the brood be coming from?

How warm do these girls like it?

My queen ate her eggs when I checked last time .. so I haven't been checking on her too much. My little temp thing says it's near 90' the box, but it is too close to the heater. I think it's about 80 or so though. I'm worried about cooking them lol ..but I have my three little boxes all touching.

I did not want to annoy anyone so I put a post it note on the acorn ants so they have a place to sit quietly. Golly I love them, very Active little guys.

Your queen probably loves being at 90 degrees.

Lucky... in malaysia we have arboreal crematogaster but i have only seen workers... and we don't have acorn ants. well i hope your colonies are healthy!!

Young ant keeper with a decent amount of knowledge on local ant species.

YouTube: https://m.youtube.co...uKsahGliSH7EqOQ (It's pretty dead. Might upload again soon, don't expect my voice to sound the same though.)

Currently kept ant species, favorites have a star in front of their names (NOT in alphabetical order, also may be outdated sometimes): Camponotus irritans inferior, Ooceraea biroi, Pheidole parva, Nylanderia sp., Paraparatrechina tapinomoides, Platythyrea sp., Anochetus sp., Colobopsis sp. (cylindrica group), Crematogaster ferrarii, Polyrhachis (Myrma) cf. pruinosa, Polyrhachis (Cyrtomyrma) laevissima, Tapinoma sp. (formerly Zatapinoma)

Death count: Probably over a hundred individual queens and colonies by now. I cannot recall whatsoever.

Well, my queen apparently is one of those I'm gonna eat my eggs all the time gals. I'm not sure if my once a week check up is what's bothering her, or maybe just the area is too noisy for her or what.. but she won't cut it out.

As such I'm planning to totally ignore her for a while.

She has no food, but she has water.

How long do I ignore her for? How long can she go without eating?

she's a claustral queen so check back in about 2-3 weeks. fight all urges to check and i'd say don't feed her to often, like once a month but this is a better question for antdrew as i focus on Camponotus and Acromyrmex, not crematogaster.

None of the ten Crematogaster queens I’ve raised has ever done this.

For the sake of full disclosure.. her tube is sitting on white sand .. which has the sad sad side effect of making it super hard to see her eggs.

I'm willing to hope that she does have eggs and I just didn't see them.

I know 100% she ate the eggs when I picked up her tube that first time. I didn't realize the issue with what I was doing and the stinking invading ants were everywhere.. so I picked her up and she ended up falling and ate the eggs.

This time I've been not moving her at all and just lifted the towel to look. I look for 10 seconds tops and cover her up again. I have a hard time seeing small things and end up relying on my phone to later.

It's totally possible that she had some eggs and I just didn't see them.

But I have a habit of hoping for things even when it's unreasonable lol.

I want to say there are two eggs on the left there. But I'm not 100% sure.
