Location - Wrightwood, CA

Date of collection - August 3, 2020

 

Habitat - Pine forest 

 

Length - 1/2 inch

 
Coloration - Black & Orange


Distinguishing characteristics - Orange gaster, very sensitive to light (apologies for out of focus photos)

Maybe Camponotus sansabeanus??? I don't know because I'm a beginner ant keeper.

I agree with Nurbs, it's in the Formica genus.

Awesome formica species.


Ants I have: Tapinoma sessile(2 queen colony). RED MORPH Camponotus neacticus(now has pupae!), Tetramorium immigrans (x3), Aphaenogaster sp, Temnothorax sp, Brachymyrmex sp.   possibly infertile   :(,  Ponera pennsylvanica, and Pheidole morrisi!  :yahoo: 

 

Other insects: Polistes sp. Queen

                    

Ants I need: Pheidole sp., Trachymyrmex sp., Crematogaster cerasi , Dorymyrmex sp. Most wanted: Pheidole morrisii

Unfortunately they are selling them. I would love to see a journal on them though.

Very strange flight, found while hiking pretty far into the woods and somehow only found one scuttling in the pine needles. I have not seen/found these with that coloring pattern at all, and can't find one with the exact colorization pattern online either.
