So I've been visiting this colony of Brachymyrmex every day for about a week, and every evening they've had alates just swarming around the entrance. They never go more than an inch from the entrance, and they'll crawl out, and then turn right around and go back in. Last night looked like it would be the night, but they didn't fly. What gives? I know colonies are sometimes indecisive but this is a new level. The same species just flew in Portland, so it's the right time of year. What time of day do they fly?

Ants I have:

1 Formica fusca group- 0 workers

1 Tetramorium immigrans colony-20 workers

1 Dorymyrmex insanus- 1 queen, used to have workers

1 large P. occidentalis colony- around 50 workers, plenty of brood

From what I know they fly in the evening, with the Lasius.

Hi there! I went on a 6 month or so hiatus, in part due, and in part cause of the death of my colonies.

However, I went back to the Sierras, and restarted my collection, which is now as follows:

Aphaenogaster uinta, Camponotus vicinus, Camponotus modoc, Formica cf. aserva, Formica cf. micropthalma, Formica cf. manni, Formica subpolita, Formica cf. subaenescens, Lasius americanus, Manica invidia, Pogonomyrmex salinus, Pogonomyrmex sp. 1, Solenopsis validiuscula, & Solenopsis sp. 3 (new Sierra variant).

Brachymyrmex depilis are night fliers, so i would set up a blacklight and see if that attracts them.

Just caught a bunch of Brachymyrmex depilis last night, around 9-10:00.
