Hey, once again as a new ant keeper (relatively) I need some advice from a Formiculture. Specifically the ant keepers on the forum in San Diego, I only have these three questions:

What are some of the common species in San Diego?

Is Anting in places like Balboa park a good place to look / is it legal?

I was thinking about going up in the hills to Cuyamaca Rancho State Park, any thoughts.

I’d appreciate it a lot if you experts in San Diego helped out, it would mean a lot, thanks!
My Ants:
(x1) Campontous semitstaceus ~20 workers, 1 Queen
(x1) Camponotus vicinus ~10 workers, 1 Queen (all black variety)
(x1) Tetramorium immigrans ~100 workers, 1 Queen
(x1) Myrmercocystus mexicanus -1 Queen
(x2) Mymercocystus mimcus -1 Queen
(x1) Mymercocystus testaceus ~45 workers, 1 Queen

I looked it up and it says it’s closed, but I will see if there’s any way I could go near it. Thanks!

I don't think you can legally collect at a state park.

Hi there! I went on a 6 month or so hiatus, in part due, and in part cause of the death of my colonies.

However, I went back to the Sierras, and restarted my collection, which is now as follows:

Aphaenogaster uinta, Camponotus vicinus, Camponotus modoc, Formica cf. aserva, Formica cf. micropthalma, Formica cf. manni, Formica subpolita, Formica cf. subaenescens, Lasius americanus, Manica invidia, Pogonomyrmex salinus, Pogonomyrmex sp. 1, Solenopsis validiuscula, & Solenopsis sp. 3 (new Sierra variant).

I thought that was only for National Parks / Wildlife Reserves, no?

It will likely be illegal to collect in any parks, city, county, state, or national. Just go to national forest or BLM land. I think some of the places we go to in the desert are also probably private property, but it's not fenced or maintained, and has no signs. So while you technically should have permission, I highly doubt the land owners care much. As a matter of fact, I know some of them don't care because we have ended up talking to them sometimes.

This is a state-by-state thing, but I know that in Illinois if it is not clearly posted that the land you are entering is private property, or somebody's residence, you cannot be prosecuted for entering it. The land owners could come out and ask you to leave, which you would be required to do, but since they didn't clearly state that it was private property when you entered you have done no wrong in the eyes of the law. You will probably want to check your individual state's laws in regards to this.

Currently Keeping:

Crematogaster cerasi

Aphaenogaster rudis

Camponotus chromaiodes

Formica sp. (microgena species)

Nylanderia cf. arenivega
