Pogonomyrmex CF californicus

 

First time trying a picture....

 

found in my backyard, being attacked by argentine ants

 

named her "Kusa"

but since when do pogonomyrmex fly this early ?

I think Drew has seen them fly this early, if not earlier.

First, can we all agree that this is pogonomyrmex ? lol, I'm 99.9% sure, but who knows.

P. subdentatus fly this early and even earlier. Now this is obviously not P. subtentatus, as they are much further north, but I think it might just be a disoriented alate or something. Have you seen anymore than this?

If it has been as warm as i have been hearing P. californicus could quite possibly be flying now.

I've been keeping tabs on a few P. californicus colonies on my street and they just barely started digging out their nests a few weeks ago. I'd be very surprised if they're already flying.


Camponotus vicinus, Crematogaster 1, Crematogaster 2, Formica francoeuri, *, *, Myrmecocystus testaceus, Novomessor cockerelli, Pheidole hyatti, Pogonomyrmex californicus, Pogonomyrmex rugosus, Solenopsis invicta

if all is right in the world, and luck is in my favor, a new species maybe ? Also, I'm getting more pictures soon.


it looks exactly like a californicus to me, to be honest....

Antsinmypants found around 50 pogonomyrmex queens last month in Fresno so...

I think people are talking about the weather as if we are still in March. The entire month of March was way above average, but April has been a different story. They are forecasting even more snow in the mountains and high desert again this week.

I keep forgetting that it is April. Here, the weather has changed very little. A tiny bit warmer, that's all.
