Not sure what species of camponotus. Possibly camponotus chromaiodes?

1. Location: Hampton Virginia

2. Date of collection: 4/6/20

3. Habitat of collection: mixed hardwoods under a log.

4. Length (from head to gaster):5/8 in

5. Color, hue, pattern and texture: black head, dark reddish brown thorax and abdomen.

6. Distinguishing characteristics: hair on abdomen

7. Distinguishing behavior: none

8. Nest description: found by her self under a log. No eggs present

9. Nuptial flight time and date: n/a

Uhh, red variants are not exactly rare. It really depends on the region though. For example, the vast majority of the individuals found here are of the high red variant, and I rarely see low red variants, except for the ones I've seen in Pomaria.

Yeah what Ferox said. The high red variant is rarer here in middle Tennessee, as the low red variant is dominant for some reason.

OOH that's A BEAUTY mate! definatly chromaiodes but that high red is what I prefer, The one I had a couple years ago was one of the lower red delates, but it was still beautiful, Ima try to get some this year

Red is not necessarily rare, but high amounts of red (what I would consider your queen to be) is sometimes less common in certain areas. I know that in my particular locality I never see chromaiodes with that much red, she really is beautiful.
