Hello from San Fernando Valley & Simi Valley!

Since I was a kid I liked ants. I eventually begged my dad to buy me "The Ants" but, at 12, I was a little behind in the nomenclature. I also like carnivorous plants, as I know some of you do. Thanks Drew for maintaining this great resource! Since there is a such a density in California anyone consider an ant meeting? We can call it "Calony"

Welcome! Awesome, I feel like the SF/SC Valley has a lot of potential that hasn't been tapped. I'm thinking of exploring some areas up the 14 next weekend. I've also got a small collection of carnivorous plants. I've found they're a good way to recycle dead queens back to mother nature :D .

Hello! I too love carnivorous plants. I've got a pretty large collection of consisting of around 10 species at the moment. My collection was once up to around 50 species at the max.

Welcome from Burbank!  I was just at Vasquez Rocks today.  So dry!  Found 3-4 different species though.  Hope we can share discoveries in the SFV/AV region going forward.

Please do! I'm hoping to head out to that area early next Sat, assuming everything goes as planned. What are some good spots to hit up?

I haven't had much time to devote to my plants so I aggregated most of my Drosera to large pots (looks nice, but bugs spreads like fire) along with a few American pitchers and a few large flytraps I got last year. I tried some miniature sundews but they weren't having it and I'm pretty sure are dead. Do you guys have problems with bugs? Mine always seem to get mealybugs, despite numerous thorough cleanings and nearly a bottle of Safers and neem.

If you take the 14 to sand canyon and you'll be setup to either drive into the river basin/canyon. I'd think there's a lot of good places out in the open. Keep on going on the 14 and you'll eventually start to get to Acton which is different type of soil. You're going to get a decomposed basalt out there. Acton is a little bit more deserty than Santa clarita. We can go look for rocks too!

plant wise, drosera get aphids when its too hot for me, I had the occasional scale bug on my sarracenia but Drosera need to be really humid. I can throw you some seeds cause I have them growing like weeds in my other pots.

PTantFan : I used to work in Burbank by the 5/134. There's a great sized horse park right near there with some sandy trails, ever been there? its right off of riverside

Ok great, that's about in line with the itinerary I had in mind based off Google, though I probably won't go as far as Acton. And I do love rocks, I'm a licensed geologist. B)
My Drosera also grow like weeds so thank you but I'm good for now, unless they are any unusual species? I don't remember which but mine are the common plain one and reddish one which you are welcome to have as well.

Speaking of 5/134 area, I think the Tujunga/Sunland area will have good potential for ants too. Maybe that'll be the next place to visit.

Don't be tempted by the gravels of santa clarita and she holds nothing!! Out in acton you can find Agates and such but you have to know where to look. I know someone who has claimed to have found an entire agate bed up in the mountains. I could only imagine the ants on the way!!

Sunland is a great area to look for ants!, there is a road, Oro Vista, that will take you in the mountains. Ants and gold, dude you've reached nirvana!

Sunland/Tujunga is MUCH close and easier for me.  I'll do some investigating, see what i can find.  I've done the wash west of the Hansen park and found nothing in the past.  So, I'll try Oro Vista and the hills next.
