For my first attempt at wasp keeping I have somehow ended up with one of the hardest species. This bald faced hornet queen was collected while hibernating by a friend and I have moved her into a standard wasp keeping setup which contains paper, cardboard and wood to build her nest. I also put in a tree branch because that is what these wasps most commonly use as nest sites.

 You'll need a much bigger container than that. They build huge hives, unlike paperwasps.

I’m planning to free range them when the colony gets bigger. Will that work?

Yes. Attach them to a tree. You want to move them out while small or risk being stung 15 million times.

Good luck! I'm always amazed by the hives these guys build some of them get to be Huge!!

Ok I didn’t even know keeping wasps was an option.

The queen unexpectedly died. She never started building a nest even after I placed everything I could to get her to build. This is also my first time and I'm hoping my next wasp queen will be much more successful.

I just collected one of these and a Vespa crabro queen while they were hibernating.
