I've noticed these ants seem to be very reliant on heat.
The brood from my current queen don't develop unless a heat source is applied, even if it's not much. Wild colonies I've found are always incubating brood under something (tree bark, large chunks of wood, rocks), often times in rather exposed environments. (One colony was on the top of a log only being protected by a loose sheet of tree bark)
