I just noticed that when trying to replying to my own post, instead of making a reply post, it appends the reply to my original post. Is it no longer possible to "reserve" the top few posts for future additions?

I think it depends on timing, within a certain time frame [like one right after the other]. My suggestion would be wait a few minutes then make another reply.

I agree with dermy or you could try using the top buttons that says "Reply to this  topic" I find it helps sometimes.
