Sometimes the fungus goes bad, and the workers will remove it little by little. Didn't you say in an earlier post, that you left the top off the fungus container? If the fungus dried out, it's probably dead or unhealthy now. Hopefully they will recover. It's best to not tinker with them too much. If there is something in the container that shouldn't be there, the ants will remove it. I still have about six new colonies that just sit in my cabinet--I hardly ever even look at them. When I do check them out, I notice the colonies and fungus gardens just keep getting bigger.

If its brown, wet, and mushy that sounds like it is rotting.

I was going to say this in my last post but thought it was a little harsh...maybe it will help explain why its brown/wet. Rehydrating dead fungus doesnt resurrect it, unfortunately. Hopefully enough of the fungus survived down near the hydrostone that it will make a comeback while you are away.

I can't tell if your fungus is just sitting on the the bottom or not but had something similar happen years ago . I was told to get my garden off the bottom and place it on a flat rock. Don't know if this helps.

Water condensing inside the fungus container is perfectly normal when it gets cooler; It's not going to hurt the fungus.
