The topic title said it all. Which is the coolest ant you have kept before? For me it is Atta texana. Tricky species but very rewarding to see how a single queen could 'magically' grow into a colony of leaf cutting-fungus grooming-soldier arming ants.

Acromyrmex versicolor or Myrmecocystus mexicanus.

Cyphomyrmex sp. And Odontomachus sp. have been my favorite.

My favorite colony at the moment is Pheidole ceres.  However, of all the species I have kept, I think I actually enjoyed P. megacephala the most.  Sadly, that colony overstepped its bounds (literally) and had to go.

If I had too choose I'd say Tetramorium,Attines,Pheidolegeton and Myrmica are my most favourite, although I enjoy all ants even plain ol' Lasius I can never get Myrmica ants out of my mind.

For me it used to be P. Californicus, but now it's C. vicinus.

Why didn't you just cut the worker population?

That's a good question.  At that point, they had actually managed to relocate their entire colony of thousands into my tropical vivarium overnight.  It's a long story, but, essentially, the way the tank was situated would have made it extremely difficult to extract them without harming the queens.  

 

Also, not long before this incident, they had literally been recruiting soldiers to chew through the hot glue in the lid, and they somehow managed to traverse vaseline immediately after I would apply it.  Anyway, very difficult ants to contain.  I did not feel right keeping an exotic species that escaped continually, even if their chance of establishment was negligible given local climate.

I done derp. The only ants on my list that I havn't kept are attines and pheidolegeton, to clear you up.

Oh, Vaseline is not good at all for those ants. You need flu-on.

It was Camponotus, any Camponotus but I'm really liking my very active Tetramorium.

I like the active ants more, like Formica, but sometimes a Lasius is as interesting, when they work together coordinated.

A Myrmica seems not to be very hectic, but on prey, they don't know any inhibitions.

My favorite that I kept is probably Acromyrmex versicolor. But it was just a queen Drew gave me, and she never took care of the fungus. But, since I kept the species (sort of), I can say they are number one. Any Leafcutter ants are my favorite. They are my favorite ants in the world.

 

I also really like seed eating ants, they probably are #2 on my list. Especially Pheidole, but Pogonomyrmex are just as cool.

And finally, I really like Forelius pruinosus/mccooki. They are really active, look cool, and are very easy to keep.
