This they can see from the sky.  You can substitute the bulb for any handheld UV light.

Have you seen this thread? http://www.formicult...rap-diy-design/

I'm in the process of making one using LEDs. If everything works as it's working perfectly in my head, it should be pretty simple and cheap. I'll post pictures when it's finished.

I swear I had posted the link in the other thread, did it get autodeleted? Or maybe from the DDoS? I'll try posting it again, but google "12 inch homebrew funnel" and you'll find it. There's a seller on ebay as well.

I keep my pool light on over night in the summer and I get sooo many queens and males that fall in... they cling to the floaty's and anything I leave in the pool (I literally get 100's)... unfortunately I get tons of crickets and beetles too.

This year I am going to collect 2 or 3 of every different species I can and see if I can get some help identifying.

Just to let you guys know I tried this trap out and it caught a bunch of gnats that were flying around in my bathroom. The flies went down the funnel into the mesh cage.

Wonderful. Now you can catch queens and their food.

I am not expecting to catch queens with this kind of device, rather a large variety of food for ants for nutritional balance.

Besides, ants don't like the same diet. My Lasius that once loved mealworm pieces are now ignoring it. Had to give them maggots for a change.

Although I did nkt buy this product I bought a bigger dual light trap for catching rhino beetles and other things months back it has 2 high voltage BL lights on PVC and a large sheet under it. The thing is pretty bright. It runs of a car battery or a boat battery. I did not know it can be used for queens but now that I think about it it makes sense. I gotta say 100$ well spent
