1. Location of collection - East Lindfield bush trail
2. Date of collection - 6 July 2018
3. Habitat of collection - Sparse Australian shrub and bushland, suburban
4. Length - about 5mm
5. mostly black, very shiny

Appears to be semi-claustral, and has a stinger

I found it scurrying about on the side of a bush trail, on a warm 25 degrees Celsius day for a Sydney winter.
Either it was finding a nesting place or fouraging.

Has good traction on glass unlike Ponera type ants

Lioponera sp.

They are in the Dorylinae subfamily with the army ants.

Lioponera sp. There is no key for the genera so I have no clue what species. They may be predators of other ants/brood.

So my new colony is a rare species and other day I dropped a myrmica rubra in to see what happened and the next part of the description tells all... I will get another video soon of the amazing actions of this species also allows other ants to come into the nest and then they are killed after being lured inside, they let them think they are in the nest but I think scent makes the myrmica rubra not attack them like they usually would and after a while they block it from exiting the nest and bite and sting it,, it then it's paralysed and then has a fit and then dies and they dump the body outside

Lioponera cf ruficornis

Looks quite similar to the images here

A tight column of black raider ants departs on an afternoon raid.

Lioponera larvata

Add her to your journal

She's in there along with any queen I have, but the ones without brood aren't mentioned much until they do :)
