1. Location - my backyard,

2. Date of collection - 26/3/2018
3. Habitat of collection - on grass edge near pavement
4. Length 6-7mm
5. Coloration - black, with a reddish head in the sun, also limbs appear red in the sun, but mostly black to naked eye

I discovered these medium large black ants in my backyard yesterday.

They are about 6-7mm, about the size of the large Pheidole majors, but some a little bigger and have larger heads, maybe majors.

They appear black, but in the sun, the heads have a redd'ish colour.

They were taken on a worm this morning, next to a Pheidole nest, so I filmed them, and captured a few for photos.

The Pheidole in the video normally appear black, and the majors with dark red/purple heads, and one of the larger Pheidole species. But in bright sun on the video, they appear quite red....

Current ant colonies -
1) Opisthopsis Rufithorax (strobe ant), Melophorus sp2. black and orange, Pheidole species, Pheidole antipodum

They kind of remind me of Philidris, but could very well be too large and bulky.

Yeah I think maybe some type of Iridomyrmex.

The head shape reminds me of Iridomyrmex, meat ants.
They are not as aggressive AFAIK, but quite a bit larger/thicker than the usual Iridomyrmex pavement ants you see around here.

Iridomyrmex lividus, blue meat ant
