I removed a 18" piece of 2x4 board from a retaining wall behind the shed in my backyard that has many hollow tunnels running through it and as I was sawing it out the Camponotus were swarming in and out or the tunnels but would all return inside when I stopped sawing.  I now have the 18" piece of wood inside a large ice-chest with a well sealed lid.  Is there a good way to lure them out so I can move them into a formicarium.  The pic is of one of the workers.

First question would be, do you have the queen? Some Camponotus species will actually be living underground, or inside hollow logs/stumps and just use wooden structures as satellite nests. The best thing I'd do is give them a place that is moist but not wet and let the wood completely dry out forcing them out.
