I use k23 refractory firebrick, and some other ones are ceramic, and are very hard to carve. Just make sure whatever you use is carve able with your tools.

Chisel, Dremel, even a drill would work. It's extremely easy to work with.
I bought it at a kiln and pottery store, called clay planet. It's cheap, five bucks for a brick around nine by four by two aproxx.
