I use k23 refractory firebrick, and some other ones are ceramic, and are very hard to carve. Just make sure whatever you use is carve able with your tools.

I have been looking for k23 soft fire brick here in San Fernando Valley. where did you buy it ystheant

What's the best way to make the tunnels in soft fire brick?

Chisel, Dremel, even a drill would work. It's extremely easy to work with.
I bought it at a kiln and pottery store, called clay planet. It's cheap, five bucks for a brick around nine by four by two aproxx.

thx. I been looking for it. my colony is at 500 ants. will soon reach 1000. and I plan to move them to a 40 gal tank. I will use the k23 bricks for the nest. all around the tank. I will open each fire brick nest as the grow.
