So, my colleague noticed formicariums on my office desk He brought me some alates from his town, caught Friday.

He found them on a wall, preparing for the flight. They are a little over 10mm, dark brown, with dark honey stripes on gaster. A tiny pointy tip on the gaster.

 

Which species is it?

Since you`re from Croatia, i`d say its lasius niger, queens look identical to my lasius niger queens

EDIT: If they were preparing for flight, and if they havent shed their wings, they might be infertile

Yeah, I though so too, but I was put off by the difference in size between them and my L. niger queen. It is not due to perspective, although, yes, the smaller queen is a bit farther from the camera (being inside the acrylic nest, and the bigger one being on the glass).

 

Soo... still L. niger?

 

And, yeah, they're infertile. My collegue, who got them for me, is not into ants, so he did not know.
