Thank you thank you thank you.
So amazingly fast and responsive now.
Can open ALL unread posts in tabs, quickly, and none of them time out.

Thank you, thank you.

The only thing is I couldn't get on formiculture since last night. I thought formiculture crashed or got hacked.

Well that's interesting. It's faster now?

By ordes of magnatude it is faster/more responsive.

I happen to be on the real internet here.
I get to know about a server's quality in a way no home ISP user can.
This site would make me feel like i must'a connected via dial up.
And behave identically when i was behind my home ISP.

I had been pretty sure this site was runing on an older bit of desktop hardware out of someone's house for how slow it was.
If i opened up 5+ tabs of new posts, odds were good some of them would time out rather than load.

Now it is as responsive as any typical site i'm used to, all tabs load quickly, no time outs. Everything is button click responsive.

WEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!!!!!!
 I dig hardware and/or service upgrades. ;)

It wasn't an upgrade though.

The firewall died, so it's temporarily behind a completely different firewall and (ironically) on a much slower internet connection. The virtual server that the website runs on is ancient, which is what I assumed was the biggest problem with it, but now I'm starting to wonder. Maybe it's possible I have too much custom security configured on that firewall, or maybe it had something to do with the firewall's drive dying.

I actually have a brand new virtual web server already built, but the current one is so old, it is going to be very difficult to move the forum over. It is going to take a big upgrade to the forum software.

Was there more work done on the website today? I could not get on. It has been working a lot less consistently in general recently.

It was offline a bit for me, topia and Virginian probably didn't notice because of the short time it was offline.

The problem was fixed, and the server had to be moved back to the data center. Some time on Monday it will be down again for probably less than an hour while it is being moved within the data center.

The server chugs again.

It wasn't an upgrade though.

The firewall died, so it's temporarily behind a completely different firewall and (ironically) on a much slower internet connection. The virtual server that the website runs on is ancient, which is what I assumed was the biggest problem with it, but now I'm starting to wonder. Maybe it's possible I have too much custom security configured on that firewall, or maybe it had something to do with the firewall's drive dying.

knowing that this is not running out of a home ISP closet on some desktop box, the way it feels when it chugs on my end.

Then i'm guesing either some way under powered hardware for the load, or as you mention, maybe some heavy handed security settings dragging out load times too much.

But if i go to the fresh post list, and start tabbing open fresh posts to go through. 3-6 tabs in, Chug chug, and time out on a tab or two that'll need to relaod.

Not belly aching, glad ot have what we got at all. Just FYI.

At home ISP or on the real internet, this site chugs under seemingly light load.

So just let'n you know what i've observed over the last couple weeks of site back end stuff going on.
