I caught a C. pennsylvanicus 2 weeks ago, Aug 27. She hasn't laid any eggs yet. Her gaster seemed to be smaller than what I normally see on pennsylvanicus. I think this is common on the late season catches.

Since she hasn't laid anything, should I put her into hibernation now for 4 months?

I also have 2 Formica queens I caught around the same time, and they haven't laid yet either. Should they go into the fridge too?

I'm worried if I leave them out and awake for too long before laying and going into hibernation, they will be too weak when Jan/Feb comes around.

Thanks,

Feed them a sugar and protein source first.
