Today in San Marcos, North County San Diego, I found a large open field and during my short walk, I found at least 10 large Veromessor andrei nests (I think.) Each nest had one or two queen alates crawling around the opening. I collected one for identification.
Is this a sign of an impending nuptial flight? Do queens gather at the surface for any other reason?
