Today in San Marcos, North County San Diego, I found a large open field and during my short walk, I found at least 10 large Veromessor andrei nests (I think.) Each nest had one or two queen alates crawling around the opening. I collected one for identification.

Is this a sign of an impending nuptial flight? Do queens gather at the surface for any other reason?

Usually, it means they are about to fly.

Cool! Thanks for the response. I'm going to check there again today and see if anything is flying.
