Pogonomyrmex subnitidus?

I think I sorta see the spine on the thorax in your photo...could just be the photo.

Wow very nice. Congrats! Did you find her in a founding chamber?

Nice. Do you mind telling us where exactly you found her? Maybe a street address or nearby cross streets? I'm tempted to go look. I have the next couple of days off.

Wow thanks for the detailed explanation! I like exploring and off roading in the desert so I don't mind nowhere-ville.

Fairly sure that most anything east of the canal out there near the Salton Sea will take you onto the Chocolate Mountain Aerial Gunnery Range.

Do not explore out toward the mountains there...

ah, yeah I had a feeling. People DO go out there, but not a very good idea.

I'm having trouble finding any decent maps that show the boundaries of the range (did google maps update something again???) but I didn't mean that the range starts right at the canal...sorry if that was not clear. There is a buffer zone between the canal and the range but it varies in size, probably legal to hunt there but also probably not a great idea - lots of desert its perfectly legal to wander around in up north of that area and nowhere near a bombing range.

Looks like P. californicus to me. I think they sometimes fly even without rain.
