Greetings from Southern California (Riverside).  I am a newbie to this group and looking forward to learning more from all of you.  My first anting trip was last week and we had a great time.  Looking forward to more.  Can anyone direct me to a good ant key for Southern California area?

I'm in california, "The valley" if you don't know its also southern california. well mate, i can direct you to quite a few areas. First being "The valley" we have species like solenopsis xyloni, Pogonomyrmex subnitidus, Solenopsis Invicta, Solenopsis Molesta, Liometopum Luctuosum, argentine ants, Formica Moki, and so on.

Welcome. I don't know of anything that only includes all ants in Southern California, but I can link you to some Southwest keys for specific genera.

I notice you made your introduction now, but have been a member for a month or so now, you could have made some of this year's final mating flights in the desert!  :(

Normally you would say the genus as will. The genus he is talking about if I am not mistaken is Pogonomyrmex. Pogonomyrmex colei. Also, I think you will not get anywhere there if you do not have Pogonomyrmex rugosus, I think they are parasitic to them
