there were millions of dead subnitidus bodies covering the entraces to their home, and completely sealing it off from the world. There was no foraging done and I'm not sure if there are any survivors. What happened ?

Disease, or dehydration/starvation. It probably has to do with the drought even though these are hardy ants, you are talking about a wild colony right?

I've seen this before. I have always assumed a lot of them drown from the rain flooding the nest, and the next day they drag out all the dead bodies as part of their cleanup.

It rained in quite a few places in Southern California the other day, not just in the deserts.
