Location : Chandler Executive Airport, Fresno, Ca, Latitude :  36°43'45.41"N Longitude : 119°49'4.66"W

Date of Collection : March 20, 2017

Habitat of Collection : Dry sandy gravel

Length : Roughly 7-9mm

Color : shiny glossy red

Distinguishing Characteristics : was discovered in founding chamber with wings still attached.

Nest description : Small founding chamber. It was very shallow, barely 2.5 inches deep.

When I first caught this ant I thought it was likely the same sp. I had posted about on the 17th. But when I got home I noticed this ant is much smaller.

So unless P. californicus can very greatly in size I'm thinking perhaps she is something else.

These were the best pics I could get. She didn't seem to want to sit still even when offered some sugar water.

On cool thing is the ant is digging her own founding chamber in my new formicarium just as I envisioned a queen doing so.

Looks like Pogonomyrmex californicus to me.

We would need a closer picture to see if it has spines or not.
