Digging in rock-hard ground?

Often if it hasn't rained for a couple weeks the dirt in the desert is going to be rock hard. Archaeologists deal with this with mini mattocks typically-- any other ideas?

The dirt in the desert is as soft as can be, rain or not. Are you talking about the foothills, where it's almost all clay?

Yeah, didn't mean like true desert just really hard ground in general
