1. Location of collection: Palomar Mountain in California in San Diego County.
2. Date of collection: 3/15/2017.
3. Habitat of collection: Near a hole where the surface had a mixture of hard dirt and stone in front of a parking lot overlooking trees and cities below.
4. Length (from head to gaster): About 15 mm.
5. Color, hue, pattern and texture: Black head and thorax, and a very faint brown/tan line running horizontally to the ant on its very very faint brown abdomen.
6. Distinguishing characteristics: Huge in size, huge mandibles for chewing, the head has a shape of a heart.
7. Distinguishing behavior: Moved fairly fast.
8. Nest description: On a hard dirt/stone surface and near a hole where there were orange colored workers smaller than this one.

I apologize in advance for the lack of clarity with the image. I couldn't get the queen out of the test tube so the test tube may distort the image, and my cellphone camera is not great.

Is this a major worker or a queen?

You sure it's 20 mm? It looks like the huge Camponotus I see a lot in the hills, that I think may be C. ocreatus. The biggest I've seen yet was 18 mm.

Sorry Drew. It was 15 mm. Honest mistake.
