When I was putting away a bunch of the newly caught veromessor pergandei queens I couldn't help but notice they definitely do not like walking on glass

What could we do to improve a test tube set up? Right now it's very simple which is great since it keeps it mold free and the ants happy but what could we add?

Maybe the inclusion of dirt or a substrate for the ant queens?

perhaps add a bit of the soil where you found the ant, but you may want to sterilize it first.
