Me and my girlfriend went on our first queen ant hunt this afternoon we are hoping we have our first queen and we are needing some help Identifying.. I know tons about beetles but when it comes to ants I was not paying attention enough in entomology thanks in advance

 

 

1. Location of collection: Black Creek Conservation Area 
2. Date of collection: 2/21/2017
3. Habitat of collection: sandy path
4. Length (from head to gaster): ~8mm
5. Color, hue, pattern and texture: 
6. Distinguishing characteristics: 
7. Distinguishing behavior:
8. Nest description:

This is what I was out looking for... according to AntsCanada at 4:14 it say Feb to March is their Nuptial Flight period so if it is it WIN for me and BECKY

Hey there Jamie. Well done on catching a queen on your first trip. I think T.C. is going for Prenolepis. looks similar. I wish I could help but I'm no expert. Someone will be online soon enough that will be able to get the job done.

If it's in fact winter ants they gonna have to spend the summer in a fridge or basement.

Welcome to the forum! Florida is a great place for anting, I am personally fascinated by Cephalotes varians, or the "turtle" ant. They live in Florida and Texas. I would love to see a captive colony of those fellas. Congrats on the Prenolepis Imparis! I hope you have a nice test tube set up and a dark undisturbed place for her to start a colony!

I'm not particularly convinced this is Prenolepis. Could you snap a few more pictures for us so we can nail down a more confident iD?
