1. Found in a founding chamber in a rotten log. (Carmel, IN)

 

2. Monday, February 20, 2017. They most likely had been in there for at least five months.

 

3. A rotting log in a park. Mixed hardwood "forest"

 

4. I've got a rough estimate as of now. ~10-12mm.

 

5. She's black to dark brown, mesosoma/thorax reddish hue.

 

6. Large head and mesosoma, striped and slightly distended gaster.

 

7. There were multiple nanitics with her. They groom and protect her.

 

8. Small claustral cell in a rotted log.

 

9. I'll get better pictures as soon as possible. As of now, here's the best I have:

Camponotus chromaiodes. Notice the lesser amount of red than Camponotus novaeboracensis.
