I found this extra small colony living on the side of a Leptomyrmex mound. There was hardly an egg to be seen and the very few workers were pale and translucent.

The queen is 12mm and the workers are 7mm. I've taken a stab at identifying them as Camponotus humilior but I could easily be wrong.

Location: South East Queensland

Nest: Clay soil, small bulge at the base of a large Leptomyrmex mound.

I believe those are native here or a similar species, I love their colors.

Amazing pics too. Just wondering, what camera did you use and settings?

Nothing special RenDragon, just an HTC smartphone on auto. It has a good close focal range. I always take a few and crop the best ones.

Very nice. I never get that good on my smartphone, though I keep trying. Time for a new phone :D

Some smart phone cameras are definitely better than others.

Here would be a funny sight, take a test tube of ants with you when your looking for a new phone and see how the pics turn out.  :D

No they re not. I know you have Camponotus caryae, Camponotus chromaides Camponotus subbarbatus and Camponotus americanus which might be similar but aren't nearly the same
