Hi All,

I made a post asking a few beginner questions over on yuku, and Crystal was kind enough to give a reply and I noticed Formiculture in his signature. It seems that Formiculture isn't doing well on google results (at least for me). So I had no idea about this place until now.

I don't have any ants yet. I have only recently moved to New Zealand from Australia (back in April). So being winter here, I have not seen any ants around or have any idea about when nuptial flights are.

I have ordered myself some test tubes, and also ordered a copy of this book: http://www.otago.ac....ew Zealand.html

Hopefully it might talk about nuptial flight times here, and I am sure will be handy when out Anting.

I really hope I can manage to catch one of the NZ endemic species, rather than an invasive species. I am sure you guys would love to see something NZ specific. Here is a link to Google Maps of the hills near where I live. Lots of trails to walk around and get access to forest. There is also untouched native forest only a short drive away here: http://goo.gl/O9qP5X But I have yet to visit it.

I guess while I wait for spring to arrive, I'll keep reading and preparing.

Welcome. BTW, Crystals is actually a girl (yup girls like ants too). :snicker: I really can't figure out why on Earth Google has this forum listed with a Page Rank of 0. That's normal for the first few months or so, but it's been almost a year, and there are tons of backlinks all over the internet by now. :ugone2far:

Welcome.

Feel free to post questions here and we will try to help you out as best we can.

I do recommend the Beginner's guide if you haven't seen it.  It gives a person a basis with ants, but still leaves room for a couple hundred questions.  :D

  My bad. Of course girls can like ants. My GF loves spiders, I got her a queensland bird eating spider back in Australia for a birthday a couple of years ago. But we had to leave it behind (gave it to a friend) before we left for NZ.

It's a shame about the Page Rank, I know google seems to have a lot of love for anything linked from wiki. Perhaps add external links to the Myrmecology page: http://en.wikipedia....iki/Myrmecology

It worked wonders for us, with the game we make.

I read through the whole guide on yuku, I'll give this one a skim too.

If you read that guide, then this one probably won't tell you anything you don't know.

Over on Yuku I was amazed at how many people never saw the beginner's guide.  So you are ahead of them.  :D
