I am considering building a formicarium for a Bracchymyrmex Depilis colony. I plan on stacking 6cm petri dish atop each other, connecting them by a silicone tube to an outworld. I am open to input, particularly about humidity control. I will add petri dishes as the colony grows, but I will start with one dish.

This will take a large colony, and for you're colony is less than a year old this won't work. Also, a out world tube, and a hydration port is needed.

Perhaps my explanation was vaguely confusing. Once my test tube setup containing a Bracchymyrmex colony is full with workers I will transfer them to a petri dish. This dish will be connected to an outworld via a tube. Once the colony completely occupies the dish, I will add another above it this time connecting it to the original dish with a tube. Hydration of the formicarium is my largest obstacle so far and I am open to pointers or advice. Hope this clarifies my above inquiry.

Have you considered putting soil inside the petri dishes? It should soak some of the soil and create a good moisture gradient.

I'm a little confused still. Do you mean a setup close to this one. (This is, "Diesels" photo of his formicarium)

Actually that's almost exactly what I had in mind. However I was not planing on making tunnels (or putting clay) in the dishes, just thought I'd keep them empty. Everything else would practically be identical.

file:///Users/Akhil/Desktop/Petridishsetup.jpg - here is a rendering of what I am going to make. The tube will be malleable and connected to an outworld. keep in mind the bottom dish will not have any attachments for the ants to enter- it will be a hydration chamber. Also keep in mind that I will only start with two dishes, the hydration dish and the one on top of it. When the dish gets completely occupied by ants I will add another dish on top of it and so forth.

Anyone have an opinion on whether my hydration method will be effective?
