Found 2 of these

 

1. Location of collection: East Ipswich on someones driveway
2. Date of collection: 18-10-2016
3. Habitat of collection: A driveway
4. Length (from head to gaster): 7-8 mm
5. Color, hue, pattern and texture: Very dark brown with shiny texture
6. Distinguishing characteristics: Long petiole node (longer than the ant queens I have collected so far)
7. Distinguishing behavior: They seem to be quite placid. The first one walked onto my scoop as if it wanted to be caught. The other one has a dried leaf in with it and seems to be residing on that leaf cleaning herself. They both occasionally curl up cleaning the tip of their gasters.
8. Nest description: Unknown. These queens were alone.

 

 

Notes: I am particularly interested to know if these are solenopsis invicta as they will need to be reported and surrendered to DAF QLD. The images aren't the best, but hopefully good enough for a +ve ID.

I wish it was that simple here down under. Unfortunately, invicta are a category 1 restricted pest here and must be reported.

I may be able to keep them (potentially with a rather expensive permit), but I wouldn't be a responsible ant keeper if I didn't report them.

So I reported them to the DAF and got a response

 

Thank you for reporting the ants you have sighted to us.

 

We’ve had one of our entomologists examine the photos, and they have advised us that the ants in the photos are possible Red Imported Fire Ant  reproductives. However they cannot make this determination from a photo.

 

We’ve arranged for some of our staff to visit the footpath/driveways at xxxxxx on Friday 21/10/16.

So still no confirmation as to whether I can keep them or not, but I'm still not getting my hopes up.

Probably the second last post from me on this topic.

 

I got a call from DAF. They told me to put the queens in the freezer and they would come out on Friday to pick them up for a proper identification. I have asked them if they could let me know the results so I could post them here. Sorry to all the hardcore ant lovers here, but this is a legal matter and I took no joy in placing them in the freezer

Haha, yeah Alabama anter, I would have to agree with Drew, Drew is very laid back, I have never seen him try to correct any ones grammar or do anything antdude did.

Forgot to post. DAF scientists confirmed these were invicta.
