I found this amac box I was gonna use for a formicarium, but I saw a little ring on the lid, mirrored on the bottom of the box... I don't know if that's just a reflection or if there is a hole on the botton, if anyone knows please let me know.

It's a ring. Local Container store has every Amac box available. I was thinking of the same thing until i saw that.

The feature in the center is where the sprue was removed from the injection molding process. It appears pitted due to backflow that occurred toward the end of the shot. It is not a hole.

Tarheel ants use those containers for outworlds I believe.

I don't think he's talking about the spot in the center from the injection molding, but the large circle. It is a circle, and it does obstruct the view. I use these containers all the time. Here's some close up pictures.

It would still make for a nice out-world. The other boxes that look good that I have seen so far are in this thread: http://www.formicult...chasing-guide/

The bottom "ring" could be easily hidden by a grout and sand bottom layer and if you drilled a hole in the top for a press fit vent I think the fit and finish would look acceptable for a DIY type project. Any style of vent should work and if there is no mesh screen you could always cut out some mesh and glue it in like you see in the 3rd pic. I am guessing with ants the mesh would have to be metal and not HDPE, but I'm not sure.

I like these two piece vents but don't know where to source them. Has anybody used that type of style and how do they work for ants?

Alright, and drtrmiller, that's the ring I was talking about... Injection mold scar sounds right now that I was reminded of it. Thanks! I will most likely be using these for a formicarium once the 4x4x4 comes back in stock.

The mesh inside round frames like that definitely makes it a lot easier. I've started 3D printing things like that to avoid having to glue stuff to containers, and to avoid having to cut out square holes, which is also a lot more work than just drilling a large round hole.

What do people use for large round/oval enclosures for reasonably sized out worlds?  I like the look of the AC ones, but at $99 a bit much for me, especially already having a 3D printer and such to do a lot of it myself.

I'm sure there is something on the container store... Drew told me earlier some thins are large petri dishes, obviously for smaller things.
