My winged camponotus queen has layed 5 eggs in the last 6 days. I caught her crawling along the outside of my house last Sunday. I've heard that most winged queens lay male alates, but I've also heard that some lay fertile eggs. Is there any way that I can tell for sure if their fertile? Or do I have to play the waiting game? Thanks in advance.

Welcome to the Forum :D

Your stuck playing the waiting game on this one. Was there any more queens flying around? Was there a Colony near by that had alates?

Not that I'm aware of... I caught two queens on that Sunday, unfortunately one of them has yet to lay eggs, and the camponotus I was talking about is up to 9 eggs at the moment. Also there was a THIRD one on the same day, but my gran went and squashed it before I could do anything.. which after inspecting its remains was definitely fertile. -.- No nests to my knowledge, there might be one at the end of my driveway but I found this in my backyard.

Have you seen your queens cleaning tips of their gasters (the last part of their body)?
Young mated queens usually do this after they settle into their homes.
Other than that you just have to wait and see for yourself if first ants are workers or male ants.
