Crystals, actual age I have no idea. I rescued this colony from a flood last September. I saved as many workers and brood as I could along with the queen.
They started this spring with about 100-150 workers
And no brood what you see has come in the last 2 months.

One thing you can count on with Formica is that they will grow fast. 
Especially the slightly more invasive species like Formica argentea and Formica podzolica.
