Hey everybody I'm just starting to get into ant collecting? I can't think of the proper name right now. i live in the central coast of California and have been interested in the honey pot ants, but I'm not sure when they fly or if there are any in my area. I have to keep researching them I guess!

Maybe some of you can help?

I've been looking at Myrmecocystus testaceus and Myrmecocystus mexicanus.

Welcome. :)

There should be plenty Myrmecocystus testaceus up where you are. M. mexicanus not so much. Those are only found in the deserts. M. testaceus have probably already flown in a lot of the warmer places, but I think it's possible there might be some flying around now in the higher elevations. I know there's also at least one diurnal species that's seen often by other people in the hobby around the bay area. It's possibly M. mimicus. Those also fly pretty early in some places.

Thanks for the link! :D

I don't live in the bay area tho, I live next to Vandenburg air force base or about an hour north of UCSB.

I do appreciate the help though. (y)

Should be the same Honeypot ants in the hills around there too.
