Hello, I found this queen in my backyard (Merida, Yucatan, Mexico). It's big and with long legs. It's a reddish brown color. It moves slow and has problems climbing vertical surfaces.

Please let me know if you need more information or more pics.

Thanks.

Looks like a weird acromyrmex. Juicy.

I don't think this is Acromyrmex but I could be wrong.

Look at the mandibles, the gaster and how square the head is.  That has to be very unique.

However I am not familiar with tropical ants and I can not get antweb to provide me a side view at the moment...

If I were to guess I would say one of the Rasopone species.

That is definitely not a genus I have ever seen before. Pretty cool.

Edit: After looking through all the genera listed for Mexico on Antweb, I don't see any of them that look like this.

I thought it looked a bit like those other fungus growing ants but I have no clue. I forget the names.

Acromyrmex, Trachymyrmex, and Atta.

Although...could it be a pheidole?

A question that sometimes drives me hazy: am I or are the others crazy?

How'd I miss that one on Antweb? It looks pretty obvious just looking at the pictures.

It was 15mm (0.6 inches). Unfortunately she didn't make it. She died two days after I found her. Hopefully I'll be able to find another one in this next rain season.

Thanks to all for your help!
