Attached is my setup.  One of my S. molesta colonies (20 workers strong) is almost completely out of water in their test tube.  Consequently, I put a test tube setup right next to it with plenty of water.  They'll move into the new setup on their own when they need to, right?  ... Even if in they're hibernation mode?  I don't need to be concerned about manual intervention, right?

It should be fine.  I would remove the tin foil from their old test tube to encourage the move.

They may not move until their current test tube is completely dry - and it can be hard to tell if the cotton has enough moisture still inside it for them to be happy.

I agree with crystal. I made a setup for this purpose, but my largest tetramorium colony still prefers to live in a dirty dry test tube despite clean full ones centimeters away.
