Very cool! I love these ants, probably one of my favorite California native species. I’ll be rooting for your queens.

I’d take those queens over C. floridanus in a heartbeat.

Ants are small creatures... but together... they can rule the world.

Give me any species of Camponotus and I’ll take it (compared to the keepers on this forum; I have no Camponotus but 3 species RIP).

Keeping:

2x - S. molesta (colonies)                1x - C. nearcticus (founding)  (y) New!

1x - C. chromaiodes (colony)           1x - C. subbarbatus (founding)  (y) New!

2x - F. pallidefulva (colonies)             1x T. sessile (mega colony)

2x - C. cerasi (colonies)  workers are here!  :yahoo:

1x - B. depilis (founding but no eggs)

4x - P. imparis (colonies)  Unfortunately no multi queen P. imparis colonies as all of the queens died due to fungus infection (assumed). RIP  :(

One thing I like about Solenopsis is that you can tell what caste the pupae is before they eclose- making the wait shorter to see if the queen is fertile or not.

Generally alate cocoons are larger than that of workers. The outliers being species with larger castes ie. Camponotus, however when founding you can tell right away. Males are much larger compared to nanitics in most cases.

Side Note:

Congrats on having such an awesome species. Camponotus ca02 are my favorite California Camponotus and I love my big colony. I can’t wait for my multi queens to get their first workers to see how long they last together.

Yes that is very true and these cocoons are seemingly normal size nanitics

Queen A looks very small and skinny, you should try and give her a drop of honey water.

One of the queens has progressed. Queen B she is up to 3 workers 3 coocons and about ~10 eggs with 2 small larvae.

Queen instead of enclosing a new worker she decided to eat it and 2 more of her cocoons. I fed her some sugar water.

I noticed colony B  preferred the 1-4 ratio of sugar water while the single queen preferred 1-5 ratio.

(3rd cocoon is out of focus in the third pic)

Some sad news the single queen died leaving 1 cocoon that I gave to my black C.vicinus :(

Good news though the main colony grew to 5 workers and i'm hoping they can get to 10 workers by the end of the year.
