Wish I could send some, but I of course live in Florida. Go to a wooden area and flip rocks and wood pieces like your life depends on it! What's going on?

Feed them some protein and make sure they have proper living conditions, The colony should bounce back once they receive some love.

I put them on heat but to really bounce back I would need to brood boost this colony as they once had 37 workers.

Give them as much protein as they can eat, the queen will need it to produce eggs. But yes, they will need a boost. I’ve heard that Camponotus can accept boosted workers, maybe if you find a wild colony you can (cool down the ants first, probably dip them in vinegar too) introduce them one by one to the queen.

Do they have just workers or a queen? Without a queen, you would just basically have to keep boosting them with different brood for no reason. If they do have a queen, then yeah you should probably try your boost them. It’s highly unlikely to happen; but brood boosting with a different larger species of ant (similar to the size of Camponotus) could work.

Keeping:

3x - S. molesta

1x - C. chromaiodes

2x - F. pallidefulva

2x - C. cerasi

1x - B. depilis

2x P. imparis (colonies) 3x P. imparis queens (1x queen in test tube, 3x queens in test tube, and 6x queens in another test tube. Can't wait to see the results!)

If you have a lot of time on your hands you could follow foragers back to the nest, but they probably won’t work. I’m not sure what size your Camponotus species is, perhaps some large Formica brood will be accepted? Do you have other Camponotus colonies? You can borrow their brood (no more than half though) just to give your less fortunate colony a push in the right direction.

That might be an issue. At that point all you can do is:

- Leave them on heating and feed more protein than they can eat

- Try a worker boost again (be sure to refrigerate both colonies and place foreign ants in vinegar to prevent fights.)

- Hope that they might accept brood from an another Formicinae species (The chances are low, but your best luck is probably with Formica or Myrmecocystus? I would say Colobopsis but I don’t think they live in CA.) Whatever you do, do not boost larvae (use pupae) as different genera will have different signals, and the Camponotus may not know when to feed foreign larvae, when they are drying up, etc.
