Is anyone else noticing a rise in Pheidole obscurithorax colonies?

Here in Texas it's nearly impossible to flip over a set of stones without seeing at least one Pheidole colony. Sometimes I get tired of seeing the typical Pheidole dentata colony just chillin like "hey how are you doing if you ever feel alone remember WE ARE ALWAYS WATCHING"

In my area Pheidole are as illusive as they can get, since there is currently only one documented species in my state which is P. pillifera. The only time I’ve ever seen this species is a super-major on the edge of a sidewalk.

Edited by Artisan_Ants, February 3 2024 - 5:57 PM.

Keeping:

3x - S. molesta

1x - C. chromaiodes

2x - F. pallidefulva

2x - C. cerasi

1x - B. depilis

2x P. imparis (colonies) 3x P. imparis queens (1x queen in test tube, 3x queens in test tube, and 6x queens in another test tube. Can't wait to see the results!)

And the reason why they're so common is because, according to AntWeb, there are 46 FLIPPIN SPECIES OF THEM in texas.

I wouldn't recommend it, we also have tons upon tons of red imported fire ants like everywhere soooooo

the biggest mistake you can make in Texas is daring to hike with sandals on

Are you sure it wasn't a major? P. pilifera is a dimorphic species, naturally at least.

Yeah it was probably a major; I had a doubt about saying “super major.”

I fully hate researching Pheidole in Texas there's like a million different species each look kind of the same

IDEK anymore about Pheidole obscurithorax like am i looking at obscurithorax or titanis?

And then there's the smaller Pheidole

I despise researching which one i'm looking at

It would help if someone could give me info on a small pheidole ant with bigger majors having black abdomens and heads, smaller majors having browner heads and black abdomens, and minors having relatively tan thoraxes and heads and black abdomens

if it helps the queens are black

The two should be rather easy to distinguish from each other. P. obscurithorax majors have sculpturing over the entire occiput, where as the occiput of P. titanis is bare of sculpturing aside from coarse piliferous punctures. Minors of P. obscurithorax have a head that is notably longer than broad with gradually tapering occipital corners; in P. titanis minors have a nearly quadrate head with broadly rounded corners.
