I’m currently vacationing in Guatemala. I need some whizzes to help me with ant IDs here!

Some kind of aphaenogaster


Also mate get some photos of atta and especially eciton if you see them. Lots of really cool stuff down there

Pheidole, something like biconstricta or gouldi, leaning more towards the latter

how can you tell this is pheidole? Long legs and body shape make me think aphaenogaster

Aphaenogaster phalangium or Aphaenogaster araneoides

I keep: C. modoc, C. sansabeanus  :D, C. maritimus, Formica argentea, M. mexicanus  :D, Odontomachus brunneus :D, Pogonomyrmex californicus, Pogonomyrmex rugosus,

how can you tell this is pheidole? Long legs and body shape make me think aphaenogaster

Many Pheidole somewhat resemble Aphaenogaster in body shape, like the species in the fallax group. This is only for the minors though.

Absolutely Pheidole, and probably just a generic fallax group. No Aphaenogaster in the region resemble that, there's only phalangium group. With a closer photo I'm sure you'd see obvious features like a 3-segmented club to rule out Aphaenogaster, but you can really just tell by habitus.

insipida minors are smaller, aren't nearly as gracile in build, and have a squarer head. I still stick by them being biconstricta, gouldi, or something related.

I think it is biconstricta. Gouldi sounds more specialized in habitat, not something you’d find in a town plaza.

Perhaps this is the same species? I found this nest between cobblestones in a private driveway.
