 I found a either winged male or queen ant in my yard in south eastern manitoba canada, and at first it looked like a regular alate but then I relized it had a stinger, but when I did research I relized that the only sting ants in canada are one species that have short stingers which this one did not have a short stinger, I pushed it againts my arm and it definitely stung me. And the other species is the european fire ant not found in manitoba. Those are the only posabilities I could find. Does anybody have any ideas of what it could be? I had it by the wings but I for some reason let go of it and it flew off and I could not find it again, so I did not get a picture, but I rember it was black, had wings and had a sleek pointed gaster. that's all I remember. Anyone have any ideas of what this ant is?

I had thought of that posability, but from what I remember it was an ant, I don't dont think we have any wasps that look like ants in manitoba, aspecialy blackish sleek ones like tarantula hawk wasps. Of course its posable, asuming its an ant, got any other ideas? Good idea though. I acadently droped it and it flew off before I could get any pictures sadly.

But I did get a decent look at it, It had a sleek black pointed gaster. and not fuzzy like a bee and not solid obvius segments like a wasp, and its sting was not very bad at all when I pressed it againts my arm.

Are you able to take a picture? From your description it does sound like a wasp but I would need pictures to be certain.

I wish I did, but It flew off before I could get a picture, I have no picture of it. I'm quite certain its not a wasp.

It looked kind of like this fire ant but black with wings like an alate

Honeslty it may be that wasp, its wierd it looks kind of like an ant besides the head, well, I hope this forum will be filled with other questions from other people to. I feel kind of stupid

Ya, it says they are about 0.8-1.4 inches big, that's prob about the size of a large alate. You guys are prob right.

It may be this was, but I feel like I would have notice the head shape, but I dought there are any stinging ants that look like that in manitoba.

I have another question, a few months ago I caught a queen ant, she layed 4 eggs which hatched into 4 workers, no wings so there not males, but since then she never layed more eggs, I feed her and everything but she never layed another egg since. Could somone help me know what to do? Why is she not laying more eggs?

Hibernation

Most Ants go through hibernation

Yeah if you are in Canada ants will be used to cold coming early. Gradually lower the temp and eventually put the colony in a cold but not freezing place, like a wine fridge.

Yes, thanks, I am in canada, but its been a while since she layed them, and its been at least a month or 2 since they hatched, give or take, though I still might try the cooling thing. I'm just curios if it has to do with the food, humidity, or something, though it could be as simple as hibernation. Thanks for the help.

I think they hatched late august
