I think the genus Aphaenogaster is quite cool. So I figured we could talk about them here. How about we do a quick poll to get things going?

Why keep ants that aren't found in your yard?

There are so many fascinating ants right were you live!

I disagree with the keeping/buying of ants that are not found in your area.

If you keep Aphaenogaster, what species do you keep? I keep Aphaenogaster rudis.

I keep A. treatae, a really cool species that few people keep. Check out my journal on them.

I have a awesome species of this genus, aphaenogaster occidentalis. They are polygynous and are just a really interesting species that isn't kept often.

Interested buying in ants? Feel free to check out my shop

Feel free to read my journals, like this one.

Wishlist:

Atta sp (wish they were in CA), Crematogaster cerasi, Most Pheidole species

I currently keep just Aphaenogaster tennesseensis, Aphaenogaster lamellidens, and Aphaenogaster treatae, but in the past I've kept A. rudis, A. picea, A. fulva, and A. N22B.

Your journal is really enjoyable to read! And what's funny is that so far (except for when I caught my queen) my colony's growth has been pretty much the same. How big is the colony now? Oh never mind that, I'm sure they are hibernating.

I am keeping an Aphaenogaster occidentalis colony, and they have been nice. I have had no problems with them having big escapes ( I am looking at you, Liometopum  :warning:) and they have been a great all around species.

Fastest is lamellidens, largest is treatae, and tennesseensis is one of the only two parasitic Aphaenogaster in the world. They are all cool though.

So guys, I was so tired of not being able to see my colony, that I decided to move them into this fire brick nest (they used to be in a THA mini hearth).  The move went well, but I think the nest is a bit big for them. What do you guys think? I think they'll be fine (I have done much dumber things), plus I expect them to grow quite a bit this year.

^ i'm curious how the whole nest with them in it looks. Could you give us a image like the previous one of the full nest you made, but with them moved in?

Thanks for any time and effort on this,

FFY

I sure like how Aphaenogaster do not spin cocoons, it is fun to be able to see the pupae turn brown. Do you guys like this behavior as well? One of their pupae just started moving yesterday, let me see if I can get a picture of the other workers licking her.

Since it is still winter here up in north east Iowa, I can't find any crickets or anything like that, and I need to be able to feed my A. rudis colony something. So I was wondering what food, other then insects you guys feed you Aphaenogaster colonies?

Try giving them hemp hearts. Mine love those. You should order feeder insects, though.
